Service of Process
In the United States, a legal procedure known as a Service of Process, or simply Process Service, declares that all parties must be notified when they are facing legal action in a court of law or administrative court. Process Service is achieved through the delivery of a set or series of documents describing the legal action. Affidavits, Summonses, Complaints/Petitions, Subpoenas, Writs, and various other court documents are all examples of documents that can be served. These documents are delivered to the person for whom the legal action is directed by a Process Server. Service of Process must be served by a person who is not a party to the case.

Skip Tracing
If you’re uncertain about an individual’s current location and need to have legal documents served or would like to collect unpaid debt, you should have them traced. The process of determining a person’s whereabouts for a variety of reasons is known as skip tracing. This work is performed by a skip tracer. The person being sought after is referred to as a “skip” and is derived from the idiomatic expression “to skip town,” which means to leave little evidence to “trace” the “skip” to a new location, possibly in a hurry.

The process of skip tracing involves gathering as much relevant data as possible about the subject. The data is then analyzed, reduced, and verified. The most important thing is to find new and accurate points of contact. The subject’s current location may be included in the data at times, but the sheer volume of information or misinformation can obscure it. The data will most often be used to find third parties who might be able to help with the process. The job becomes more than just research at this point.
Even when no specific information is returned, public databases exist that cross-reference skip tracing information with others the “skip” may have lived with in the recent past. For instance, in the event that previous records indicate that a third party and a “skip” shared a house, the third party may also be “skip-traced” in an effort to locate the “skip.”
